Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s) / Sportspeople
CRY CARDIAC TESTING AT DARTFORD CRICKET CLUB Sunday 11th May 2025
I am writing to spread the word regarding the cardiac screening programme for young people aged 14 – 35 that is being hosted by Dartford Cricket Club, at Hesketh Park, Dartford, on Sunday 11th May 2025. This screening is partly sponsored by The Ben Daniels Memorial Fund www.bendanielsmemorialfund.com
Young people who participate in sports are likely to put more stress on their hearts than those who are not active participants. But if they should happen to have any underlying cardiac abnormalities, they are more likely to be at risk. It is important to stress that exercise is NOT a bad thing, and that participation in sport of itself does not lead to cardiac arrest. But it can sometimes be the trigger which sets off and exacerbates a previously undetected heart condition, leading in the very worst-case scenarios to the death of a young person. Screening therefore is extremely important because of the following:
- every week in the UK at least 12 apparently ‘fit and health’ young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions.
- most of these conditions do not exhibit any symptoms.
- 80% of young people who die suddenly have no history of obvious symptoms
At a screening, the young person undergoing the procedure, will be tested via an electro-cardiogram (ECG), that examines the electrical activity of the heart, and if deemed necessary, an echocardiogram (ECHO), and a physical examination. It is a non-invasive procedure that will take no more than 10 minutes to complete and is performed by qualified cardiac physiologists. Our expert mobile screening team regularly screens, amongst others, the England Cricket, Football, Hockey and Rugby national teams.
The ECG results will be examined in the first part of the screening, and some individuals will be required to undertake a follow-up echocardiogram (ECHO). This is an ultrasound scan of the heart that looks at its size, structure and blood flow. All results suggesting any abnormality will then be sent to CRY’s consultant cardiologist Professor Sanjay Sharma, a leading expert on inherited cardiac conditions.
The screening clinic will be held at Dartford Cricket Club, from 9am to 4pm and appointments are in 10-minute bookable time slots.
If you would like to be tested or have your son/daughter tested for their cardiac health, please contact Phil Alger from Dartford CC as below.
