New Chairman of Cricket Announced

Dave Webb has recently decided to step down as our Chairman of Cricket. Dave has worked tirelessly during his tenure, and we thank him sincerely for his immense contribution to the club.

Following this news, several of our Life Members came together to discuss the best path forward for the club’s stability. They approached the Management Committee (ManCo) to formally propose that Surge Singh Birring take up the helm on an interim basis to lead us through to the next AGM.

ManCo has reviewed and fully endorsed this proposal from our Life Members. Accordingly, Surge will become acting Chair of Cricket effective immediately, serving until the AGM when a permanent Chairman of Cricket will be elected by the membership.

As always, the pathway remains open for nominations for the position. Should anyone wish to be considered for the role at the AGM, I ask that you reach out to either Neil Wilson or myself in the first instance. 

With the new season approaching, it is vital that our cricket committee functions at full speed & strength. I am pleased to confirm that Dave has kindly offered his full support to Surge to ensure a smooth and speedy handover of responsibilities.

The Junior Autumn Indoor Training Programme has now been confirmed.

 Softball sessions for children in School Years 1-4 will be held at Wilmington Leigh Academy.

 Hardball sessions for children in School Year 5 and above will be held at St Columbus School, Bexleyheath.

Mohammad Ilyas

Dartford Cricket Club is saddened to learn that the former test cricketer and Club member Mohammad Ilyas has passed away at the age of 79 in his home town of Lahore.  

“ILY” was a very popular member of the Dartford Cricket Club Ist XI during the 1980’s.   ILY had a dashing batting style added to which he was a very useful leg-break bowler.  Competitive on the field but very good company off the field, ILY was simply a joy to be around particularly when his occasional eccentricity would leave us in stitches.  Every Dartford cricketer will remember their time in ILY’s company.

It is hard to imagine that ILY played the first of his ten Test matches before his sixteen birthday.  Even more daunting is the fact that he took guard opening the batting against none other than Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson in their prime!  During the eight or so years playing for Dartford, ILY regularly featured amongst our top run scorers and wicket takers.  ILY was some player.

After his playing career came to an end, ILY went on to become the Chairman of Selectors for Pakistan but was dismissed in 2011.  ILY had a daughter who lived in Crayford and we last saw him at Hesketh Park just a few years ago on one of his last visits to the UK.

All of us that at the Club who have such fond memories of ILY send our deep condolences to his family for their loss.

 Dear Members,

As we prepare for the upcoming season, we are holding a Players’ & Members Club Meeting to elect our captains and, more importantly, to discuss the future of our club.

 Why your attendance matters: Beyond the elections, we need your input on the club’s strategy and direction for the next few years. 2027 marks the 300th Anniversary of Dartford Cricket Club. This is a monumental occasion in our history, and we need to start planning now to ensure it is celebrated appropriately. We need players, non-playing members, parents etc to participate more in club matters to help shape the road to 2027 and beyond. There is a lot to do and collectively we can generate the energy and passion to return the club to its status as a Premier League club.

Your Attendance is Required: If you are a playing member, you are expected to attend. If you absolutely cannot make it, you must submit your reason for absence via the form below. Players unable to attend in person will be permitted to cast their vote virtually through the form. Non-Playing members are invited to participate in the club’s strategy and planning for the next few years.

Dartford Cricket Club –  Free Dementia Awareness Session

📅 Date: Monday 11th November 2025  – 7pm Start.
📍 Venue: Hesketh Park Pavilion
 

Dear Member,

On behalf of Dartford Cricket Club, I would like to cordially invite you to a free Dementia Awareness Session  that is being run for the club by one of our key sponsors, Home Instead Dartford.

We believe this is a truly valuable opportunity for our members and the wider community. The one-hour workshop will cover important topics such as:

  • Understanding Dementia: What the condition is and how it affects people.
  • Early Signs: How to recognize the early signs of dementia.
  • Positive Impact: The difference early detection can make for both the individual and their family.

With over 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK, it is a condition that likely affects many of us or our loved ones. This session, led by Home Instead’s Dementia Champion Ram, will consist of an appr. 45min presentation followed by Q&A time.

This event is open to all members, as well as their family and friends. We do, however, need to limit attendance to a maximum of 100 people. To help us with our planning, please register your interest by  book your free place below.

Juniors Autumn Indoor Training Programme – Schedule & Venue Changes

Unfortunately Wilmington Leigh Academy have announced that their Sports Hall will NOT be available from 5th November to 25 November as it will be used to host their exams.

Once again this late notification, after we have made all the bookings, has created a lot of additional work for us as we try to find alternative schedules and venues for your child’s coaching programmes.

There are very few venues in the Dartford area that provide indoor cricket facilities but we have managed to secure the best options for our Autumn programme.

Here is the revised schedules:

Softball sessions (Wednesdays at Wilmington Leigh Academy)

5 November – Session Cancelled

12 November – Session Cancelled
