Date of story: 20 May 2010

Jim Lowrie aka Gower talks to us!

Each week MLR will be tracking down a different player in the club for ‘featured player of the week’ and asking them questions about why Dartford CC is the best club in the world!

First up is….. Jim Lowrie!

Nickname - Gower

How long have you played at the DCC - This year will be my 30th season

Best Game played in - Evening Standard semi vs Enfield 1993, brilliant crowd, fantastic team effort with no 1 stand out performance, great result and superb to see David & Bob Willis so upset that we had knocked out another Middlesex side!

Funniest DCC moment off the pitch - I could write for ever on this but still the best moment was either:

  • Eddie Stanford saying that he had a ford escort when asked whether he was a ‘roundhead’ or ‘cavalier’
  • Jobbers telling me in a quiet changing room discussion that he had a great session the night before, so good in fact that Jean had stood at the end of the bed and applauded him. That was funny enough but the following week he was given a standing ovation by the whole team when he turned up for the game!

Funniest cricketing moment - Nosey Parker at The Vine claiming a run out to win the game, running about whooping and doing hitch kicks only to find out there was no one at the non strikers end as the batsman had a runner who was standing leaning on his bat on an adjacent strip (something all 10 other players were well aware of)

Best Trainer - Asics Gel 100’s

Worst trainer - Tricky as my 1st thought was Ronny T which is understandable I guess as the ‘tin man’ is falling apart but on reflection it’s probably Earl or Sunny/Sam J, the former as he has too much timber (not a reference to downstairs), the latter as both need to do some weights as they both throw like girls

The Joker - Probably myself, Cookie or RT. There are some young pretenders but you can’t beat experience

Favourite all time cricketer - There can only be 1 person, you do the ‘math’!

Favourite DCC song - ‘1 lump or 2’, Big Breakfast jingle from early 90’s, took us all the way to The Oval in 1993 (especially funny when sung by Mick Chaffe)

Top DCC Score - 200* v Hartley

Best Figures for the DCC - No idea but have taken ‘5 for’ before believe it or not and can count Cookie & Fitzy as notable scalps!

Favourite Grounds - Royal Hesketh, Farningham

Disliked Grounds - Bexley, Blackheath, Hythe, Eynsford , Orpington

Who is your DCC hero/inspiration - John Cully, can still make the ball ‘talk’ at 50+
